How We Use Cookies
We strive to respect your privacy and minimise the data we collect. We use Plausible Analytics, which we self-host on our own infrastructure. Analytics requests are proxied through this website’s own domain, so your browser makes no request to any third-party analytics provider and no analytics data is sent to Plausible Insights OÜ. The software sets no cookie and stores no identifier on your device. To count unique visits it derives a hash from the requesting IP address, the browser user-agent, the site domain and a salt that the software rotates daily, so that a visitor cannot be recognised across days; per its published design the analytics application does not store the raw IP address or user-agent. The information kept is aggregated: referral source, pages viewed, visit duration, device type, operating system, browser and country.
Plausible Analytics
Because the instance is self-hosted, we are the controller for this data and it is retained under our own retention practices. Plausible is open-source software, and the counting method described above is its published design, documented at plausible.io/data-policy. We cite that page for the software’s design only: it describes Plausible’s own hosted service, which we do not use, so it is not a description of who processes your data. Two infrastructure providers are in the path and act as processors — Netlify, whose edge proxies the requests, and Hetzner Online GmbH, which hosts our server.
Because no cookie or similar technology is stored on, or read from, your device for analytics, our view is that the consent requirement in regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, which applies to storing or accessing information on a device, is not engaged by this use. This is our assessment of our own processing and is provided for transparency. We have not obtained a legal opinion on this point. It is not legal advice, and it does not limit your rights under UK GDPR, which are set out in our Privacy Policy.
